Dear Friends,

Welcome to The Legend’s Journal.

If you found an old journal tucked into the glove box of a dusty truck somewhere in Baja, we'd like to think it would read a lot like this.

We've been sending newsletters for years, but we wanted to create something with a little more substance, something worth pouring a cup of coffee for each month.

Inside you'll find stories from the trail, gear that has earned its place around camp, seasonal weather updates, and a look at one of our upcoming adventures if you're ready to make a few stories of your own.

Then there's Lullabies, Legends & Lies—our favorite corner of the journal. We should probably mention that if your college professor assigns a paper on Baja California, this shouldn't be your only source. But if you want the version that's been passed around ranch tables, fishing camps, and late-night campfires, you've come to the right place.

We're also excited to feature guest writers along with original illustrations by local Baja artist Alejandro A. B., whose artwork brings these stories to life in a way words alone never could.

So pour yourself something good, dust off your Baja map, and settle in. Whether you're planning your next trip or simply missing the peninsula, we hope each issue brings a little of Baja's adventure, history, and character into the comfort of your home.

STORY FROM THE TRAIL

When Ordering Fish in Baja

Earlier this spring, during one of our Northern Baja expeditions, we climbed aboard a local panga to explore some of the more remote corners of the Sea of Cortez. At the helm was my good friend Mike. God gave Mike the complexion of an Idaho potato and the vocabulary of an old Baja fisherman. The combination is confusing enough that when locals hear him talking from a distance, they expect one person and get an entirely different one. It never gets old.

On the ride out he started working on me.

"You ought to jump in and spearfish with me."

He knew exactly what buttons to push. Spearfishing has become my latest obsession, second only to surfing. But I gave him the responsible guide answer.

"Not today, Mike. Unless the guests are dying to spend the next hour watching me float face-down on the surface, I think I'll stay in the boat."

The truth? They probably wouldn't have cared one bit.

Mike kept trying to convince me, but I was feeling lazy and continued using the guests as my excuse. (Don't tell Mike.)

Finally, he gave up, pulled on his wetsuit, and slipped over the side alone.

Solo freediving is generally frowned upon, so I kept my eyes locked on him as his long fins disappeared into the clear blue water. I glanced at my watch and started counting not expecting to see him again for at least a minute. Ya he has gills.

Ten seconds.

Twenty.

Thirty.

Just over thirty-five seconds later he surfaced. I was about to tell him he was losing his edge when his spear broke the surface…..without the shaft. He'd already fired it!

A few moments later the water erupted. Mike wrestled a huge White Sea Bass to the surface before heaving it over the side of the boat.

"How did that happened?" I asked.

"I dropped to the bottom and the visibility was terrible," he laughed. "Saw a big dark shadow, thought it was a yellowtail, and shot."

I'd only wanted enough fish for dinner. Mike brought back enough White Sea Bass to cater a wedding. I would have been more specific.

What's that old saying?

Kelty Loveseat

Price: Around $150

We've been using the Kelty Loveseat in camp for more than five years, and I still think it's one of the best values in overlanding. We currently have 11 of them in service, and after hundreds of guests, thousands of miles, and years of abuse, we've only retired one. It didn't wear out—it lost a fight with a few wind-blown embers that melted a hole straight through the seat.

The only consistent complaint we've heard is that the original version sits a little low to the ground. Getting into it is easy. Getting out... that's another story. If you're the last one around the campfire and there's nobody nearby to lend a hand, you may find yourself rolling out of the chair and crawling your way back to standing.

Apparently Kelty was listening, because they now offer a taller version. When our original chairs finally reach the end of their lives, that's what we'll be replacing them with.

Another thing we appreciate is how compact they pack. Considering they comfortably seat two adults, they take up surprisingly little space in the truck.

Would We Buy It Again? Absolutely. In fact, we'll probably upgrade to the taller version.

LULLABIES, LEGENDS & LIES

The Ride that Saved the Herd

Long before Rancho Meling became one of Baja's most iconic ranches, it was known as Rancho San José. And long before Alberta "Bertie" Johnson Meling became the matriarch of the ranch, she had already earned a reputation as one of the toughest women on the peninsula.

Travel writer Arthur W. North described her as a woman of "quiet dignity," while locals told stories that sounded almost too unbelievable to be true.

One of those stories began with a warning.

As a young woman, Bertie had befriended many of the Indigenous workers employed at her father's nearby Socorro Mine. One day they quietly passed along troubling news: a group of men was planning to steal the Johnson family's cattle from a remote mountain pasture.

There wasn't time to get help.

Instead, Bertie climbed into the saddle and rode. The journey was so demanding she wore out one horse before climbing onto a second, finally reaching the herd after thirteen grueling hours. When she arrived, she immediately began moving the cattle into another valley, hiding them before the rustlers ever reached the pasture.

By the time they arrived, the herd had vanished.

Every last animal had been saved.

Stories like these earned Bertie legendary status across Baja. She would later help rebuild Rancho San José after the 1911 Magonista Revolution, transforming it into the Rancho Meling that still welcomes travelers today.

The remarkable thing about Bertie wasn't that she became a legend. It was that she became one in her own lifetime.
